Surface verification confirms a field meets safety, performance and contract specifications — whether you need handover verification after installation, scheduled performance checks, post‑incident testing, or proof‑of‑compliance for an RFP. Bush Sports Turf pairs third‑party accredited testing protocols (impact attenuation / Gmax & HIC, infill and permeability tests) with our in‑house construction verification tools (millimeter GPS / RTS mapping for elevations and grade conformity). We provide comprehensible test reports, remediation prescriptions, and documented SOPs that help owners, boards and insurers make fast, risk‑based decisions.
Which verifications do we perform?
Safety & performance testing (Gmax & HIC)
Measure shock attenuation and head‑injury risk using ASTM test methods and field drop‑devices. Deliverable: timestamped Gmax/HIC report with point‑by‑point data, average values, and remediation recommendations.
Infill depth & material testing
Measure infill depth, composition (crumb rubber/TPE/EPDM, coated sand), and, when required, coordinate lab analysis for chemical/particle composition. Deliverable: infill depth map and sample analysis summary.
Permeability / drainage & surface temperature checks
Permeability testing per ASTM references and spot surface temperature measures to inform playability and heat‑mitigation options. Deliverable: permeability rates, recommended drainage interventions, and temperature log snapshots.
Construction / surface verification (elevation & grade)
Millimeter GPS/robotic total station mapping to verify as‑built elevations, surface slopes, crown and drainage lines to contract tolerances (2 mm accuracy options available). Deliverable: colorized elevation maps, deviation reports and corrective action plans. (Bush Turf employs millimeter GPS/RTS for surface verification during construction and handover.)
Standards & methods we follow
- ASTM F355 & F1936 procedure references for Gmax impact attenuation testing (A‑missile drop device).
- ASTM F3189 (Gmax & HIC artificial athlete), ASTM F1292 (playground surfaces) where applicable.
- Best practice reference for inspection cadence and maintenance integration — industry guidance suggests testing at handover and periodically (commonly every 1–2 years unless contract requires otherwise).
Typical verification packages (example)
Handover Verification (new install)
Baseline Gmax/HIC grid (per ASTM), infill depth mapping, GPS elevation verification, and consolidated handover report. Includes certification letter and digital deliverables.
Annual / Scheduled Surveillance
Spot Gmax/HIC testing at representative points, infill checks, and short report with trend comments. Ideal for contract compliance and risk management. (thomastesting.com)
Incident / Pre‑Event Rapid Verification
Expedited testing and “fit‑to‑play” advisory after weather events, heavy use, or visible damage.
What owners receive (deliverables)
- Point‑by‑point data (CSV/Excel) and summary PDF with averages, maximums, and flagged exceedances.
- Georeferenced Gmax/HIC map overlays for synthetic fields and infill depth heatmaps.
- Elevation deviation maps and engineering notes for construction verification (colorized contour or raster export).
- Remediation plan with prioritized actions (maintenance, infill adjustment, seam repair, shock pad replacement, drainage fixes) and estimated costs/timelines.
Typical test cadence & when to test
Recommended at handover (new field), after major repairs or infill changes, after extreme weather events, and then on a routine basis — commonly every 1–2 years for synthetic turf unless your contract or insurer specifies otherwise. Frequent testing is advised for high‑use / community rental fields.
Midwest & climate considerations
Freeze/thaw, snow removal and seasonal compaction affect both surface hardness and drainage; we advise scheduling verification outside freeze‑thaw window and after seasons of heavy use. Our agronomist teams translate test results into season‑specific maintenance and winterization guidance for IL/IA/WI/MO/MI fields.
Pricing & procurement notes
Pricing depends on field size, package selected, grid density (number of test points), and required lab analyses. Handover packages (comprehensive) are higher‑cost but provide full documentation for RFP closeout; surveillance packages are priced per field per visit. We issue written quotes after a free pre‑assessment.
FAQs
What is Gmax and why does it matter?
Gmax is an impact attenuation metric measured by standardized drop‑device tests (ASTM procedures such as F355/F1936). It quantifies surface hardness; values above accepted thresholds may increase injury risk.
Who should perform verification testing — the installer or an independent lab?
Independent third‑party testing is recommended at handover to avoid conflict of interest. Bush Sports Turf performs in‑house construction/elevation verification and partners or coordinates with accredited labs for Gmax/HIC and laboratory analyses when needed.
How long before we get results?
Standard on‑site results (Gmax/HIC point values and verbal summary) are available the same day; a consolidated PDF, geospatial files and recommendations typically delivered within 48–72 hours for standard packages. Faster turnaround available for expedited jobs.
Can you verify natural turf surfaces?
Yes — natural turf hardness/compaction is commonly measured with Clegg or drop‑device methods and inspected for rootzone health, drainage and playing quality; we combine field assessment with lab testing when required.
